Ryan’s rugby career began when he joined the Washington Irish RFC, after losing a bet. After immediately suffering two bruised ribs at his first practice, he became hooked on the “elegant violence” of the sport. Ryan’s knack for learning names made him a shoo-in for fullback, and he relaxed in the back 3 for the duration of his playing career.
Retiring after his mother-in-law gently suggested he stop using her as emergency medical transport, Ryan began coaching the Bell High School girls’ rugby team in Washingon, DC, followed by coaching stints at Anacostia High School and Ron Brown High School. Feeling that he didn’t get enough of interpreting laws to angry partisans in his day job as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill, Ryan began his refereeing career in 2017. Ryan is excited to further clarify and explain the laws as the Training officer for Potomac. He currently lives in Washington, DC with his wife and their cat, Scrummie.
