Marlena discovered rugby while going to school down at UVA. After playing in college, she played for Northern VA Women’s rugby and coached Loudoun High School Girls rugby. She heeded the call for more referees and was certified and began refereeing in the spring of 2016. Since then, Marlena has dedicated herself to becoming the best referee she can be and serving her fellow Potomac Referees having served on the board since 2017 in various roles. One of Marlena’s favorite parts about refereeing is how much of the DC area rugby community she has been able to connect and build relationships with through the whistle. Many of these folks now have become referees themselves and she is excited to serve the region with what she is most passionate about - recruiting and retaining referees. Marlena recruits and retains referees by identifying and engaging with folks interested in refereeing, working with the RDO to ensure new referees are adequately supported and existing members feel appreciated/supported.
